Marriage or Couples Counseling Sucesses
Ever wonder about the effectiveness of marriage/couples counseling? Check out this website from the Family Marriage Counseling directory. It gives some encouraging statistics. It also gives documentation for research sources such as the U.S. Census, U.S. Dept of Labor and Consumer Reports. In a nutshell, it tells us that of those who went to a marriage/couples therapist for help, 75% reported significant benefit from counseling. It’s been our experience that this percentage holds true for the couples we’ve worked with. Anecdotally, the couples who are most successful are the ones who 1) come as a couple together, 2) attend sessions weekly, 3) are motivated to get help, 4) do the homework assigned, and 5) are willing to hang in through the difficult times in order to see the long term benefit. Incidentally, it doesn’t seem to matter if there’s an affair (emotional or sexual), it both partners are willing to commit to these five elements.
